From a distance, two teak tables might look identical. However, once you step closer – run your hand across the surface, observe the grain patterns, or notice the subtle marks etched into the fiber – you might find that these two pieces evoke entirely different feelings.

The term “Teakwood” only tells us the species of the wood.
It doesn’t tell us:
How long it grew,
Where it came from,
What it has endured,
Or how it was prepared before becoming a piece of furniture

This is why Reclaimed Teak, FIO Teak, and New Teak, despite all being “teak,” possess distinct characters and properties.

1. Reclaimed Teak : Material Infused with “Time”

Reclaimed Teak is salvaged from old houses or structures that have stood for decades.

Throughout its life as part of a home, the wood has been seasoned by air, heat, humidity, and countless seasons. Over time, the wood fibers naturally dry out and settle.

This stability is one of the reasons high-quality reclaimed teak is highly sought after for premium furniture. But at WoodTist, we are just as interested in the traces left by time as we are in the material’s durability:

• Grain patterns that have deepened with age

Because of this, no two planks are ever the same. For mass production, this inconsistency might be something to control. But for WoodTist, it is the very starting point of our design.

2. FIO Teak : The Balance Between Quality and Consistency

FIO Teak refers to teak from the Forest Industry Organization’s plantations, which are legally sourced and typically aged 30 – 40 years or more.

When processed through proper Kiln Drying (KD), the moisture content can be precisely controlled, making the wood stable before production begins.

FIO Teak is ideal for furniture that requires material consistency and a balance between quality and cost.

However, the label “FIO Teak” doesn’t automatically mean the wood has been seasoned. If you are buying raw lumber, the one question you should always ask is: “Has this wood been Kiln Dried (KD) yet?”

3. New Teak : Material That Requires Time and Proper Preparation

New Teak generally refers to wood from younger plantations. This type of wood often has a lighter color, a higher proportion of sapwood, and in some batches, high internal moisture.

This doesn’t mean New Teak cannot be used for furniture. It simply means we must understand the condition of the wood before using it.

If high-moisture wood is assembled into furniture immediately, it may shrink or warp over time. Therefore, kiln drying and moisture control are critical steps for New Teak.

Why does WoodTist choose Reclaimed Teak?

We don’t choose reclaimed teak simply because it is strong or expensive.

We choose it because every plank possesses something new wood cannot instantly recreate: Time.
